FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • How does electrolysis work?
Electrolysis is performed manually, meaning your electrologist will be removing each individual hair, one at a time. A probe is inserted into the hair follicle, the hair is treated and then removed with forceps. Only the area around the hair bulb is being treated. This localized treatment results in minimal irritation and pain.
  • Is electrolysis really permanent?
Yes! Electrolysis is the only FDA approved method of permanent hair removal.
  • If it's permanent, why do I have to keep coming in?
Hair cycles and everything you see growing currently is not ALL of your hair. Over time, we will remove all hair in the area as we treat each hair cycle.
  • How long are treatments?
Appointment length is unique to each client. During your consultation, your electrologist will examine the treatment area(s) and estimate how long it will take to complete the first clearing.
  • How long will the entire process take?
During the consultation, your electrologist will go over the treatment schedule with you. There is a treatment plan for every area of the body and keeping to the schedule is strongly encouraged. If the schedule is not kept, or if the client fails to prepare for treatment properly, this can extend the finish date.
  • Can I do more than one area in the same appointment?
Absolutely! If one area is finished before the appointment time is up, we are more than happy to touch up another area or work as many areas as you need!
  • Are there any areas that you can't treat?
We can almost treat anywhere you grow hair. However, electrologists cannot do treatment where mucous membranes are present, like the inner nose, or in the inner ear where we cannot see the point of attachment.
  • I have dark skin. Will it still work?
Electrolysis works for ALL skin tones! Unlike laser hair removal, we are not administering treatment on top of the epidermis (the top of the skin layer where melanin lies), but actually going beneath the epidermis into the dermal papillae. Therefore, electrolysis can be used safely on any and all skin tones.
  • Do I have the right hair color for treatment?
Since hair is being manually removed by your electrologist, and treatment is not dependent on hair pigment, virtually any hair is treatable by your electrologist. Blonde, gray, red, light brown hairs - all the hairs you are cautioned that laser cannot treat - can be treated with electrolysis.
  • Will I scar from treatment?
Scarring is highly unlikely at New Leaf because of the type of probe we use. Due to the probe being insulated, your chances of scarring from treatment alone are rare.
  • Can you work on or near tattoos?
Yes! Electrolysis is safe to use on or around tattooed skin!
  • Should I be worried about treatment damaging tissue, glands, or other things under my skin?
New Leaf Electrolysis uses only insulated probes. The part of the follicle receiving treatment is so pin-pointed with the active probe tip that you don't have to worry about other tissues or glands being harmed.
  • I'm prone to hyperpigmentation. What will happen with electrolysis?
Most clients with hyperpigmentation do well with electrolysis at New Leaf because of the insulated probe and show no signs of hyperpigmented skin. However, those that are extremely prone to hyperpigmentation know how easy it is for even small irritations, like hair growth in general, to produce hyperpigmented skin. Hyperpigmentation is not permanent. Skin will slowly return to its previous condition. It will remain up to the client to weigh the risks of temporary hyperpigmentation versus the benefits of electrolysis. Talk to your dermatologist about hyperpigmentation before receiving electrolysis treatments to discover options available during and after treatment to lessen the likelihood of hyperpigmenting.
  • Can you work on moles?
Yes! Electrolysis can be used to treat hairs that grow in or around moles. All we need is a note from your doctor or dermatologist saying the mole is safe to work on.
  • Does it hurt?
Every client's pain tolerance is different. Some clients need no pain relievers in any areas, and some clients need numbing cream and an oral pain reliever for all areas. A common quote we hear is, "It's a lot less painful than I thought. I should have done this years ago."
  • Is there anyone you can't work on?
Aesthetically speaking, no! All skin tones, hair types, and genders are welcome to enjoy the benefits of electrolysis. However, if you are a diabetic who is unstable in treatment for diabetes, we cannot perform electrolysis because of the improper healing that would occur. Also, for those who have pacemakers, it would be dangerous to perform treatment because of the small electrical current that may be present during the treatment from our machine. If you have blood borne diseases, you must make your electrologist aware of them and they will discuss whether or not they are able to provide treatment. If you have MRSA or a staph infection, we cannot provide treatment until a doctor's note has cleared you to resume treatment. Your electrologist has the right to discontinue treatment if they feel unsafe or if it will negatively affect the client. Your electrologist may ask for a doctor's note to clear you for treatment if any issues arise that may inhibit or complicate further treatment.
  • What's the youngest person you can work on?
As a general rule, if the potential client has reached puberty and are mature enough to undergo treatment, we will gladly administer electrolysis. We require an adult to be present during appointments for minors.
  • How is laser different than electrolysis?
Laser is a temporary form of hair reduction that uses a pulsating, intense beam of light to damage hair follicles to inhibit growth. The light cannot accurately penetrate down to the "root" of the hair and seal the blood supply efficiently every treatment. This results in hit-and-miss results for hair removal. "Indeed, many patients experience complete regrowth of hair on their treated areas in the years following their last treatment. This means that although laser treatments with these devices will reduce the total number of body hairs, they will not result in a permanent removal of all hair" (Laser Facts from the FDA). With electrolysis, an electrologist manually removes each hair after being precisely treated. Treatment takes place in the dermal papillae, where capillaries, carrying the blood supply that feed the hair, are cauterized and cells programmed to create hair are destroyed. Each treatment done by a skilled electrologist ensures that the blood supply to that follicle is sealed, guaranteeing permanent results. Because of the precision of each treatment, you can expect permanent results and smooth skin after you've completed your electrolysis treatment plan.
  • I'm currently doing laser, can I also do electrolysis?
If you are receiving laser hair removal treatments in a separate area as electrolysis treatments, you can certainly do both at the same time. However, we cannot provide electrolysis treatments on the same area that is currently undergoing laser treatments. Please contact New Leaf for further instructions.
  • Do you sell packages?
At New Leaf Electrolysis, we do not sell packages. We prefer pay-as-you-go to make treatment more affordable. Our prices are very competitive and we aim to make electrolysis accessible to everyone, no matter their financial situation.
  • Do I tip my electrologist?
It's the thought that counts! Although your electrologist would be flattered you feel gracious enough to tip them for their service, we do not accept tips. We would like to be viewed as medical professionals. Please use your extra cash to treat yourself after your appointment!
  • Can I go out in the sun before/after treatment?
After your skin has healed for 24 hours after treatment, you may go in the sun, but take precautions that the treatment area is covered. You can be in the sun before your appointment as long as you do not get a sun burn. We cannot work on damaged skin.
  • I'm sick today. Should I still come in?
If you are contagious, please reschedule. We do not want to infect the treatment room or others who share our space.
  • Can I bring my child or a friend?
We love any opportunity to share the world of electrolysis with others! We have a small waiting area available for your friend or family member as they wait for you to finish your appointment. Due to the nature of electrolysis appointments, treatment rooms are not very kid friendly. For this reason we request no children accompany you to your appointment. If you find yourself in a bind, please contact us to discuss options if a situation arises where you may need to bring your child.
  • What is your cancellation policy?
We charge a $50 fee or $50/hour fee for an appointment canceled within 48 hours of the scheduled time. In order to cancel or reschedule your appointment, please text the office at 469-343-8365.
